Vanessa Lapicki's Story
I had roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery on October 30, 2007. It was the smartest thing I ever did, and likely the first thing in my adult life I ever did just for myself. It was truly lifesaving. I never would have even considered it but for Dr. Mark Lamos, who had been my PCP since 1996. That was the first year I had health insurance as a grownup. His delivery of that weightloss surgery suggestion was impeccable.
I had already moved to Baltimore city, and he asked if I had walked to my Hunt Valley appointment because my blood pressure was 180/120. He said to me, "You could drop dead walking back to your car." I was 385 pounds that day, and I'm 185 pounds lighter today – I am so very thankful that I have stuck around to experience life!
I have since mentored several people having weight loss surgery who did not have the benefit of such an inclusive program focused on preparation, and that has been rewarding.
