"The Nurses Taught Me a Lot About Parenthood"

Melissa Hartner's Story

I was pregnant and was referred to Dr. Khouzami because my gynecologist did not deliver babies, and I had the best experience with Dr. Khouzami and his whole team. They were nothing but great. It was my first pregnancy, so I had a million questions, and they would sit and talk to me and answer everything I asked.

Towards the end of my pregnancy, I started leaking. I had to go to Labor and Delivery (L&D) twice a week for NST and ultrasounds, and eventually the time came when I had lost too much fluid and had to deliver the baby. Dr. Khouzami sent me to L&D, and his partner, Dr. Hunter, was the delivery doctor that day. From the first moment they took me back, they were absolutely amazing.

Dr. Hunter let me wait until my husband and my mom got there before she did anything. I was scared through the whole process, and it was a very long 16 hours, but Dr. Hunter and the nurses never once gave up on me. They checked on me to make sure I was as comfortable as I could be, and when it was time for an epidural, I didn't think I could have one because I had had back surgery. The doctor who does the epidural called my back doctor, found out what was where and was able to give me an epidural.

It was an eventful experience from start to finish. At one point, the doctors could not find my baby girl’s heartbeat and I started hyperventilating. The nurse was right there holding my hand and, thank goodness, they found my baby’s heartbeat. When it was time to push, the nurses did such an amazing job coaching me and never let me give up!

After my baby girl made her arrival, the first thing one of the nurses asked was, “What do you want to eat?” Of course, she was my favorite nurse after that! Then they took me too my room, and it was such an amazing room! The nurses would come in and check on me, and if I was sleeping they would come back later and let me keep sleeping. At one point I woke up and started freaking out – the nurse had come in while I was sleeping and took my baby girl to the nursery so I could get some peaceful sleep.

The staff let my whole family come back to my room to visit, not just a certain number of people. The nurses that took care of my baby girl were absolutely amazing – they handled her with care as she was just 5.1 pounds. They answered any questions, helped me if I was unsure of anything and explained every test they did on my baby and the reasons for the tests.

I couldn't have been happier with my experience with GBMC, and I can’t thank the staff enough for all of their help and care! They really taught this first-time mom a lot about parenthood!
