"Skilled and Trained Staff"

Elizabeth Goff's Story

When I was pregnant with my first child, as well as my second and third, my OB was Dr. Allen. I love her entire staff. I had high blood pressure throughout my pregnancy and there were concerns about enlarged kidneys. Dr. Allen answered every question and concern. I was induced a week early because even on bed rest my blood pressure was high. We delivered Mason Alexander at 2:21 a.m.

After he was born, a nurse in the nursery noticed Mason was turning blue. She notified the pediatrician and they ran some tests. At 8 a.m. on May 5, 2011, we were told that our son was in the NICU. We were devastated, to say the least, and he was transported to Johns Hopkins where he stayed for a week. I was cared for by Wing Wah, a wonderful nurse, and when I demanded to be discharged to be with my son, everyone on staff made sure I was "well enough" to leave. They were sympathetic to my needs without compromising my health.

Mason had tetralogy of fallot, a congenital heart defect, and to our utter heartache lost his fight on July 8,2011. If that nurse in the GBMC nursery had not noticed his color, doctors said he wouldn't have lived more than three days. Instead, we had our son for two months and three days.

Dr. Allen and her staff went above and beyond. They sent a card and called to check on us. They even attended his funeral. As busy as their office is, they took time to be there for me and my family. Dr. Allen gave me her mobile number in case the hormones were too much for me. She never pushed for medication and always listened. When I decided I needed something for the panic attacks, she understood. She has since delivered two more children, both of whom are healthy at fifteen months and two and a half years old. The staff members in her office are more than just doctors and nurses, they are friends.

Because of GBMC, I know my health, and that of my family, is in the best hands. I was given the extra attention needed with my second and third pregnancies and was always made a priority. I now get to enjoy my two toddlers and was able to enjoy two months that I would not have had with my son if not for the watchful and trained skills of the nurses on staff. I am excited to watch my children grow and to continue to flourish!
