"Kind and Compassionate Physicians"

Elizabeth Steinbach's Story

On November 4, 1980, my husband and I entered GBMC as parents-to-be. I was in active labor and the doctor told me it was time to come in and give birth. What I wasn't expecting was the fact that all of my normal doctors were "off" that night.

My stand-in physician was Dr. John McGovern, and I had never met him. I was nervous and in a lot of pain, but he couldn't have been any nicer to me.

I was in labor most of the night, and our son did not arrive until 3:00 a.m. the next morning. Through it all, Dr. McGovern was kind, compassionate and quite aware that I was new at all of this! I felt so fortunate that he was my "fill-in" doctor. He helped me through a long labor and safely delivered our son.

My son is now 34 years old, married and living in Durham, North Carolina. Four and a half years after my son was born, our daughter was also delivered at GBMC (and was a much faster delivery!). She is married, living in Alexandria, Virginia, and recently delivered our first grandchild.

I feel so blessed to have delivered two healthy children at GBMC. My husband and I were so lucky to have our children brought into this world with the help of GBMC doctors.
