"Roller Coaster Ride"

Diane Shipley's Story

My son was born at GBMC in 1995. He was a 24-week-old preemie weighing only one pound and thirteen ounces. He spent 138 days in the NICU, and the doctors and nurses were a gift from God. Their knowledge when taking care of my son was irreplaceable. He had many surgeries and procedures, and it was a true "roller coaster ride."

My son is now 20 years old and is doing great with no health problems except for being blind in his left eye. That's because his retinas detached twice, but that's a small price to pay considering what his prognosis was. He was only given a 20% chance to live, and he fooled us all. By the grace of God, and with the care of the doctors and nurses, I have a healthy, beautiful, smart twenty-year-old son.

Thank you, GBMC, for everything! Because of GBMC, I have watched my son live a normal life and graduate from high school with honors, and he has gone on to be a fabulous artist. He makes me proud every day of his life.
