Constance Pitcher's Story
Over 20 years ago, I was invited to join the GBMC Foundation Board. Prior to becoming Vice Chair of that Board, I was excited to take on the challenge of chairing the Capital Campaign to build the beautiful Gilchrist Hospice Care on-campus facility. We had the good fortune of Jeanne Vance as the major donor in that campaign. We were able to raise all of the funds we needed, plus add a major road and begin an Endowment Fund, all in record time.
The donors to this campaign became so committed that, during a thank you dinner my husband Bill and I hosted at our home at what we thought was the end of the campaign, we had two major donors add an additional $1.5 million! In the beginning, few people understood the hospice concept, and that made it, at times, a daunting task to try to raise funds for this project. But, it has also been incredibly rewarding to have had so many people over the last 20 years go out of their way to tell me what an amazing experience they, their family members and their friends have experienced through Gilchrist.
After joining the Hospice Board and Chairing it in 2001, I basically had a ring-side seat to witness the refined growth that has exceeded all of our original expectations. This is due, mainly, to the leadership of a dedicated staff and a group of passionate volunteers without rival! I cannot imagine my life without this rewarding experience or my connection to GBMC. I have made many new and lifelong friends. Bill passed away at Gilchrist in 2011, and I cannot even begin to think about anything other than his peaceful beautiful ending there.
