"Volunteering at the Information Desk"

Barbara Dee's Story

I have been volunteering at the Information Desk for over twenty years. It can be quite challenging, but it is also very rewarding. Most people are appreciative when we give them directions to where they are going.

For the first-time visitors, the campus guide can be overwhelming. Many are nervous and sometimes just a kind word can relieve their anxiety. It is amazing the number of people who do not know the correct spelling of the last name of the patient they are visiting, or know the name of the doctor with whom they have an appointment.

We try very hard to get each visitor to the proper location, and this is not always easy. The two most frequently asked questions are “Where are the restrooms?” and “Where is the cafeteria?”

I have been privileged to work with some great people and have made some wonderful friends. It is a pleasure to come to work and I am proud to be a volunteer at GBMC.
