Angela Roser's Story
In September of 2013, I was at the lowest point in my life. My weight and health were out of control. I was weighing in at a whopping 425 pounds. My family and friends had all expressed concern about me, about my health and about the fact that if I continued the way I was, I was going to die sooner rather than later. I was 33 years old and these were not things I wanted to face at such a young age.
I made a decision that month to seek help. I did a little research and found that the GBMC Comprehensive Obesity Management Program had the most information available about their program. I attended an information session with the wonderful Dr. Elizabeth Dovec. I was inspired and hopeful again that I could get my life back. On September 5, 2013, my mother and I had our first one-on-one meeting with Dr. Dovec. Dr. Dovec was so passionate about saving people from obesity and made me feel so comfortable with her. She answered all of my questions, alleviated my mother's concerns and guided me in the right direction for me.
Exactly three months later, on December 5, 2013, after meeting all the requirements including losing 55 pounds according to the plan Dr. Dovec had created for me, I arrived at GBMC for a life-changing appointment. The day had arrived, and I went into the OR to have a roux-en-y gastric bypass performed. It was the best decision of my life! It saved my life completely.
Since the start of my journey, I have lost a total of 277 pounds. I have gone from 425 pounds to 150 pounds, from a size 28 to a size 4. Best of all, I have my life back. I'm able to do things that I haven't done in years, including running and playing with my niece.
Surgery was in no way a quick fix for me. It works hand-in-hand with a complete lifestyle change, and I love my new lifestyle. I exercise daily and make healthy choices with my meals thanks to Dr. Dovec and her team. My only regret is that I didn't make this decision sooner.
Because of the life saving surgery performed by Dr. Dovec, and the support of her team in helping with my lifestyle change, I have been able to run a 5k and am planning on running a half marathon in May. I'm able to keep up with my seven-year-old niece and run around and play with her. I have gained so much confidence in myself that I feel I can accomplish anything. I even obtained a promotion at work!
